UponWilkinson's death in 1938 his wife succeeded him and continued to develop the community until her death in 1966. After her death some of the original settlers left Weston for other parts of Florida while others moved back into Weston after experiencing various changes during the 1960s through 1990s.

The area now known as Weston was first settled by Seminole Indians in the early 1800s. In 1892, the Stroud family built their plantation just east of downtown Weston on what is now called Wright Boulevard. They were one of many families who benefited from white settlement in this area during the antebellum period. In 1914, George A. Wright opened his machine shop at 5th Street and Western Avenue in Weston that became one of Florida's leading machinetool manufacturers. In 1922, he became Florida's first elected Mayor with over 60% of the vote and served until 1940 when he ran unsuccessfully for Governor against incumbent Democrat Tallahassee Starke
