The name Wildwood may come from two sources: One source suggests that it derives from "wild wood" or "forest," as in the term " wild onion," and another suggests that the place was originally called White Dale because of its abundance of whiteWillow trees. It was first settled by Germans in 1868. The current community started to form around 1886 when local physicians and pharmacists built a clinic on what is now Elm Street. Wildwood experienced rapid growth after World War II thanks to development along the St Pete River by two groups of men who were entrepreneurs called the Pee Wee's Playmates and General Motors Plant No. 2 (GMP2). GMP2 manufactured Buicks, Pontiacs and other cars for Ford Motor Company starting in 1948; it also built a plant for making nuts and bolts which became known as Bolt & Nut Manufacturing Co., later renamed Nut Products Corporation (NPC). After GMP2 left in 1957, production shifted to suppliers such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GT) until 1958 when NPC merged with Goodyear to form Wacoal fame until it discontinued operations in 1984 due to antitrust concerns . In 1990 Wildwood consolidated with neighboring communities of Westshore Beach Village and Horizon Beach Village into one municipality under the name of Wildwood-Westshore BeachVillages Incorporated In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place both within town limits as well as outside town boundaries including several high rise buildings along Gulf Boulevard near US 19/I-4 which have recently become office towers providing excellent facilities for businesses including restaurants and entertainment venues
