The Wildwood, Florida Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was first organized on October 25, 1917 and served in the Spanish-American War. In 1921, the Wildwood, Florida Regiment became part of the United States Army. In 1935, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Division (Airmobile). On December 8, 1941, the division was activated and fought in Operation Overlord during World War II. After hostilities ended in 1945, the division returned home to Wildwood. From 1951 to 1957, it served as an armory reserve unit and then again from 1959 to 1966 as an infantry brigade combat team. From 1967 to 1971 it served as an armored brigade combat team before conversion to a light artillery battalion in 1972. It remained here until 1993 when it relieved its predecessor battery at Fort Brooke Beach and moved into permanent headquarters at Fort Pierce Naval Air Station.

The first settlers in Wildwood were French Canadians who arrived in 1827 and founded a trading post on present-day Indian Road. By 1830, settlers had increased to twenty two, and by 1833 they had built a log cabin and named it "Wildwood." In 1834 the town was platted and incorporated as a village under the name "Brevard." After Brevard's incorporation, new businesses were established including one run by Dr. Jelliffe that advertised vaccines for horseback riding and white men driving teams of oxen from plantation fields to market; other early businesses included a bakery (1840), hardware store (1860), doctor's office (1868), blacksmith shop (1872), cheese factory (1876), seed store (1878) and post office (1901). In 1865, when war began between Spain and America over Cuba, Brevard voted not to secede from Florida but did sign an alliance with Mexico which led to military occupation of our islands by Spain. Consequently, many people in Brevard left their homes forimarid before hostilities ceased in 1898. Many families returned after peace arrived but others chose exile or relocation due to political instability in Latin America following American victory there against Spain
