Wildwood, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Amarillo metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Wildwood was made by Captain John Smith in 1606 when he and his crew built a temporary trading post on the Stonington River. In 1769, General James O'Keefe's brigade under Colonel James Wilkinson attacked Spanish Fort San Lorenzo de la Vega during the British Invasion of Cuba and destroyed it. In 1811, Thomas Denny founded Denny's Mills in what is now Wildwood with help from local farmer Samuel Denny. By 1814, all of present day Leon County had been organized as part of the Seminole Nation and wildwood became an Indian reservation. The town grew rapidly after western expansion began in 1835 with development of railroad lines connecting Tampa to Jacksonville and St Petersburg to Pensacola. In 1845, Wildwood had 2 stores and 12 homes; it was then known as "the little outpost on the bay". The population reached 10,000 by 1860 but declined due to immigration (mainly Irish) and land ranching by Anglo-Saxon farmers until a small revival starting around 1920 led to new commercial growth which has continued uninterrupted to this day – including retail shopping centers such as Sears & Roebuck and JCPenney; health care provider CVS Health; restaurants including Olive Garden/Pizza Hut/Long John Silver's Seafood restaurant; office buildings such as United States Trust Company (now JPMorgan Chase); arts organizations such as Panama Republic Symphony Orchestra; schools including Sacred Heart Catholic School (established 1865), Baptist Bible Institute (1872), Union Senior High School (1892), Clearwater Intermediate School (1912), Miami-Dade College Preparatory School for Boys (founded 1915). Today Wildwood remains an agricultural community with some light manufacturing activity but most residents are engaged in agriculture or other related activities that support its rural character.Prior to 1800 there were no permanent settlers living hereabouts."
