Wildwood is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,645 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Santa Rosa metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 as a cattle and horse ranch on the banks of Mobile Bay by Major General James Wilkinson Wildwood and his wife, Harriet (née Walthall). The name Wildwood may be derived from a Seminole word meaning "wilderness." A plaque located in the community commemorates Wilkinson's gift to the town of $5,000 for its first school. The town received another donation of $10,000 in 1916 to build its first municipal building. In 1920, Wildwood incorporated as a village with a mayor and nine trustees. At that time it had two stores, one blacksmith shop and one store owned by white citizens only. In 1935 it became an unincorporated community with no governing body other than individual households. In 1951Wildwood voted to become part of Pensacola city limits effective October 1st following passage of local ordinance No. 3 which allowed for annexation into any municipality withinEscambia County having population over 10,000 people without further vote or consent from the residents thereof; however this annexation did not take place due to lack of agreement among various factions involved including Mayor Hargrave who vetoed it Since then Wildwood has experienced many changes both good and bad with mixed results often resulting in conflict between different groups led byMayor Hargrave One example would be when construction began on Interstate 95 through town concluding up costing more than anticipated therefore making much needed money available for infrastructure projects elsewhere; this caused great anger amongst some residents who felt they were taken advantage of
