The Navy has a long and rich history in Wildwood, Fla. The first Naval base was established here in 1861 when the Department of Navy leased land from the Seminole Indians. It was called Fort Myers Naval Station and served as a training ground for naval officers before being moved to Miami in 1898. The base played an important role in the Spanish-American War and World War II, and it is still used today by the military as a research center. In 1957, the United States Congress passed legislation authorizing the creation of a Naval Reserve Fleet at Wildwood. This allowed for the storage and deployment of ships and equipment during times of national emergency. The fleet became operational in 1962, and its purpose was to provide stability on Florida's coast while vessels were being sent to other parts of the country for Operation Neptune's Spear, which aimed to destroy North Vietnamese forces responsible for attacks on U.S. military installations throughout South Vietnam. In 2002, Fort Myers Naval Station became surplus property and was sold to Wildwood entrepreneur Darnell Earhart for $2 million dollars. Earhart plans to use the property for housing, business opportunities, cultural attractions,and parkland purposes. He also plans to create a visitor center that will house exhibits about navy history, culture,and life in Wildwood during World War II and beyond.

Wildwood is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by John Sisson and his wife AnnaWildwood named for the wildwoods of North Carolina where they had been living as farmers. In 1907, Wildwood became an incorporated community with a post office and two stores. The first telephone service arrived in 1919. In 1964, Wildwood annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs for a total population of 2,812 people. When Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida on October 26th 1992 it destroyed most of the homes and businesses in Wildwood leaving only 199 residents remaining within its boundaries which included 139 families residing in 221 housing units (78% owner-occupied). After years of hard work by local officials including contributions from local banks and businesses who started up new lending programs to help rebuild the community, Wildwood re-opened its doors to shoppers on November 7th 2001 as one of Floridas largest shopping districts with over $1 billion worth of retail sales since its reopening including more than 535 store fronts located throughout downtown & peripheral business districts
