Wilton Manors is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,965 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Wilton" comes from the Seminole word "wilin," meaning to go out and trade or sell goods. The first settler in this area was John Coker in 1885. At that time, it consisted of only a few trailers and a small bit of land on what is now Sunrise Boulevard. Wilton Manors is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,441 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Orlando metropolitan area. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1821 as a citrus growing community on Seminole Island located near Pensacola Bay. The name of the island changed to Wilton Manor after Wilkinson's death in 1825 and it remained the town's name until 1959 when it was renamed for then-Governor of Florida William H. Wilton. The population reached 2,000 by 1920 but declined during World War II because many soldiers were sent to fight in Europe instead of coming home to plant crops and support their families. In 1957, the community became an independent municipality and remains so today with a single governing body known as "The City Council." Wilton Manors is located at (32.814573, -87.717912). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000,[2] there were 1,461 people, 553 households, and 384 families residing in the town.
