It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wilton Manors was founded by Welsh settlers in 1837 and named after a man who had been an officer in the Seminole Wars. The community became a stop on the railway system for local farmers and merchants who grew crops and sold goods along the tracks. After World War II, Wilton Manor saw growth as residents began moving into new homes around Interstate 4 (I-4) and Bayfront Park Boulevard. The current shopping district known as "The Village" was developed in the late 1990s by developer Al Macaluso after he purchased two properties adjacent to I-4 east of downtown. Wilton Manors is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. It was founded on October 25, 1907 by settlers of English descent who arrived from Wiltshire, England. The town has grown to include a population of over 11,000 people and is known for its golf courses, shopping malls and businesses. The town was first named after the manor house which was built in 1847 by Colonel William H. Wilton. In 1911 the village of Wilton Manor merged with nearby Fort Lauderdale to form the independent municipality of Wilton Manors. The name change came about because at that time all of Broward County were named Broward because it had been part of Cuba until 1898 when it became an American protectorate. Wilton Manors is located on State Road 818 east of Sunrise Boulevard in southern Broward County. The town takes its name from two places: the manor house and the villa where many early residents lived before moving to their more permanent homes near the community center and other businesses around the start of World War II. At that time much production took place within walking distance for workers at various factories and plants in downtown Fort Lauderdale including JBL Audio & Television Company (later Westinghouse Electric), Lockheed Martin Aircraft Industries Limited (later McDonnell Douglas) and Pasternack Rubber Products Company ( later Jack Daniels). After World War II most manufacturing activity moved out westward into new suburban Towns such as Davie or Coral Gables while many original buildings still stand today including both the manor house and several churches which are used as retail stores or offices by local businesses like Bob’s Pizza PCL Inc., Walmart Supercenter-Westfield Shopping Center, Home Depot-Homespun Mall etc.). In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place with newer housing being erected along with commercial space available for lease or ownership by developers interested in bringing new life to this historic community which continues to thrive despite challenges like high crime rates, limited access to public transportation and long commute times from major cities like Miami Beach or Ft Worth TX but also retains a sense of community identity unique among similar sized communities throughout South Florida.
Wilton Manors was founded in 1892 as a citrus fruit orchard. The manor passed through several hands before being purchased by the Stutz family in 1922. The family ran the property until it was sold to the city of Wilton in 1938. The city used it for housing and parks until it was razed in 1969 and replaced with a shopping center.
