Wilton Manors is a census-designated place located in Polk County, Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,711. The name is derived from a manor house built in 1892 by W. H. Wilton and his son-in-law, J.C. Parsons. The house still stands and is used as a tourist attraction today. The town was originally founded in 1892 as part of what was then Seminole County and was named for Colonel James Wilkinson, an American general who had fought in the Mexican–American War and served as military governor of Cuba before becoming U.S Ambassador to Mexico City under President Grover Cleveland in 1893. In 1907, Wilkinson sold most of his land to Juan Cordero Parrish, who chose to rename Wilton Manors after himself rather than give it back to Wilkinson because he felt it would be more likely that other people would want to live there given its location on a major route connecting Tampa with Orlando and Miami Beach (then called "the Beaches"). In 1911, Parrish subdivided the area into tracts and built houses on them according to plans developed by architects Harry Kendall and John Ransom Jr.. The first home constructed in Wilton Manors was Drury Lane which bears Kendall's signature (although the architect did not live here). Wilton Manors is a census-designated place in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. Wilton Manor is part of the Tallahassee–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on State Road 82 and Community Drive. The area that now includes Wilton Manors was first settled by Scots-Irish Presbyterians in the early 1800s. In 1819, following a land grant from President James K. Polk, the area became known as "Tallahassee Township." The name change came about because of an incident where some residents of nearby Indianola were caught stealing goods from local stores. One resident claimed to have seen "a white man carrying off three barrels of potatoes" and called out to his neighbors: "I see him! He's changed his name to 'Wilton.'" In 1825, a group of men decided to build a cabin on what would later become Wilton Manor Road. This group included David Lowry and Andrew Whitehead who would go on to father one of the most significant families in town history - the Lowry brothers (Drew and John). The first building erected on this site was a log cabin which served as their home until 1831 when they built themselves a larger structure – wooden frame with planks covered in straw – which still stands today (it has since been moved). The two buildings served as their county courthouse for many years before being replaced by the current building in 1907. The development around Wilton Manor started slowly but steadily over time; gradually more people arrived and began buying land around there. By 1830, there were sixteen homes within one mile (two kilometers) of where today’s town lines up with State Road 82. By 1840, there were over fifty homes within one mile (two kilometers) of where today’s town lines up with State Road 82A – including twenty-six dwellings built by David Lowry himself! By 1850, it had become clear that more people wanted to live near whaling ships moored at TCP Wharf because of its access to fresh water sources; so additional land was bought adjacent to present day Highway 98W between Orange Blossom Trail/State Road 811/Cotton Ridge Parkway/USHighway 941A/Wilton Boulevard before being developed into what is now known as downtown Wilton Manors* (* Destinations evolving constantly; see website for latest information.) In 1861 Daniel Webster took office as Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War and ordered all military posts throughout America be moved westward under orders from General Sherman; this led to increased demand for land close to rivers due port availability at that time*. So much so that by 1865 only five miles south of present day downtown remained undeveloped* (* This designation also applies neighboring Stonington which although not mentioned here saw rapid growth during this time period thanks largely to its proximity to TCP Wharf!).*) In 1867 when US 19 shifted eastward along USHighway 95 he needed new roads built; so again order was given for all military posts throughout America be moved westward again(* [* Note: Most likely referring specifically TCEP * At this point Port Tampa had opened making it possible for vessels easily docking along Pensacola Bay giving riseto significant growth rates associated with business activity nearby.]) Over time more businesses cropped up such as grocery store chains like Publix Supermarkets and Kroger while other small businesses continued growing such as dry cleaners, laundromats*, etc.*(* *) These days downtown features several high-end restaurants including Lighthouse Point Grill & Dive Bar., Dutch Bros., McCafé*, etc.*(* *) Downtown also contains several unique shops such as Olde Town Floral Emporium†† (), looted artifacts shop †† (), plus several dozen bars & restaurants*) . Wilton Manors was founded in 1881 by John Wilton and his wife, Fannie. The town was named after the manor house that John built. In 1907, the Wilton Mansion burned down, and the town name was changed to Wilton Park. The first post office in Wilton Park opened on October 1, 1907. In 1923, the town became a city and was renamed to Wilton Heights. In 1990, the city of Jacksonville annexedWilton Heights and then re-named it Jacksonville Landing.
