Wilton Manors is a census-designated place in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded by settlers in 1898 and named for Wilton Manors, England. The first post office opened in 1901. The community took its name from the manor house that served as its first courthouse and jail. In 1953, Wilton Manor voters passed a referendum allowing the town to annex adjacent Fort Myers Beach; this annexation increased Wilton's population by 10%. In 1964, another referendum passed to annex neighboring Belle Glade; this annexation increased Wilton's population by 20%. The last annexation happened in 2002 when Wilton Manor annexed nearby Stonebridge Park. The economy of Wilton Manors depends on tourism which also includes manufacturing and service jobs. Wilton Manors is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Coral Gables–Miami Beach–Fort Lauderdale Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Wilton Manors was first inhabited by Arawakan Native Americans who were displaced by European colonists in the early 17th century. The name "Wilton" was given to them by Captain John Williams, an Englishman who visited the area in 1560. In 1642, after a treaty between England and Spain resulted in French ceded land including what is now Wilton Manors, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased some of this land from the Spanish for £4 per foot (1 pound = 4 Spanish pesos). He gave it to his son Daniel Wilkinson, who named it after himself and his father's home town of Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, England. The original settler families included those of Nicholas Biddle and Samuel Hartley; these communities eventually merged into one when they all obtained official incorporation as a CDP on March 5, 1931. In 1867, local developer Hernando de Soto donated 320 acres (12 km²) to Miami University for use as a public park—the largest donation ever made toMiami University then or since.
