Wilton Manors is a small town in St. Petersburg County, Florida, United States located on the Gulf of Mexico about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of downtown St. Petersburg. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1892 by J.M. Wilton and his family as a stop on the "Manors" train route which ran between Tampa and Fort Myers. By 1912, most of Wilton had been developed into a small town with a post office, grocery store, two churches and nine homes. The community name derived from one of J M Wilton's children who named his home "Wilton Manor." In 1922, the post office moved to its current location and operated until it closed in 1978. In that year, the first school opened in what is now the visitor center and still operates today as part of the Wilton Manors School District #2A which includeselementary through high school students from both sides of the street where they live next to each other on Main Street near US-1/Allegheny Road).
