The first Europeans to visit Wilton Manors were Giovanni da Verrazano and his crew on their return from a voyage around Cuba in 1514. They set up an inn there and named it "Fortunato". A man by that name was instrumental in helping to bring development to the town during its formative years. In 1885, William Jennings Bryan purchased 2/3 of interest in the First National Bank of Wilton Manors from James Purdy. The bank became known as Northern Trust Company after he died in 1904. In 1957, businessman Mortimer Ziegler donated land south of Interstate 95 for what would become Coral Gables High School; it opened as Broward County's first high school on October 1st, 1958. During its early years, Coral Gables had limited enrollment because most students came from nearby towns such as Fort Lauderdale and Sunrise which had more schools available than needed for the small number of students who were coming to attend Coral GablesHS. In 1978 both Broward County Sheriff's Office and Miami-Dade Police Department moved into new facilities across I-95 from where they currently stand today while still maintaining their old addresses (Northeast corner FM 1493 South & NW Third Ave., Southwest corner NW Second Ave., Northeast corner NE Fourth Ave.) After many years of growth and expansion within the boundaries set forth by Mr. Ziegler’s gift - now home to North Park Elementary School (grades PK – 6), North Park Middle School (7 – 12), Coral Gables High School (13 - 17) - much activity took place west of I-95 including: Stonington Drive SW (Grade 7 – 12), Canyon Ridge Road SE (Grade 5 – 8), Belleview Boulevard NE (Grade 4 – 6), Harding Avenue WNW (Kindergarten through 8th grade) - making this once “dead” side road one busy artery leading into downtown core day & night! Wilton Manor started developing when developer James Purdy bought 2/3rds stake in First National Bank #WiltonManors1885 From William Jennings Bryan . This led to growth with many businesses moving into this part of town including Northeastern Trust Company across I-95 which later became North Park Elementary School Then North Park Middle School And finally Coral Gables High school Which Opened On October 1st 1958
