On December 7, 1941, the United States of America was attacked by Japan. The American military responded with a massive air offensive that destroyed many of their Japanese targets. One major result of this campaign was the deployment of the United States Air Force (USAF) to Winter Garden, Florida in order to provide support for ground forces. The USAF had been activated on September 15, 1939 and was originally tasked with providing air cover for army units during World War II. Inactivated on October 1, 1946, the USAF re- activation occurred on December 7th as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear which led to Japan’s surrender. During its deployment in Florida, the USAF played an important role in supporting both ground forces and civilians. Some key aircraft used in this campaign were the Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jet and Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber. Their deployments have ranged from short term engagements such as those involved in Operation Neptune’s Spear to longer term operations such as Operation Desert Storm which saw them play a leading role in confronting Saddam Hussein’s regime. The special operations community has responded well to these deployments by becoming more proficient at managing airlift resources while conducting counterterrorism operations outside of conventional ground warfare theaters. As OIR continues its downward Spiral due to increasing Russian aggression throughout eastern Europe and Eurasia, there is likely greater demand for unique aviation capabilities that can be provided by Army or Navy personnel who are not attached directly to JFC Commanderates. This presents a unique opportunity for United States Military Aviation manufacturers who may be able to provide innovative solutions that could improve US Special Operations effectiveness during future deployments overseas.

Winter Garden, Florida was founded in 1867 by Captain George Washington Smith as a small community on the banks of the St. Johns River. The area now includes much of Polk County and portions of Seminole and Pasco counties. Winter Garden became an important agricultural center during the 19th century, with extensive plantations including Queen's Plantation, which still stands today as one of the most unusual plantation houses in Florida. In 1906, when Winter Garden was merged into Miami-Dade County, its citizens voted to rename their town after President James K. Polk who had served in that county from 1845 to 1849. After his death in 1893, his wife Mary died at age 83 years old and is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery there. During World War II, many local businesses contributed millions of dollars to help furnish materials for the military effort; many remain extant today such as the Jacksonville Armory and Winter Garden Naval Air Station.

The community quickly grew to include homes for the disabled and others who needed help. In 1971, Winter Garden became a city and in 1978, it incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization to serve the community more fully. Today, Winter Garden is one of the most vibrant communities in Southwest Florida with an active downtown and diverse cultural offerings.
