The Winter Garden Flying Tigers were an air force unit of the United States Air Force stationed in Winter Garden, Florida. The unit was activated on 16 August 1942 and served with the Ninth Air Force during World War II. TheFlying Tigers disbanded on 26 September 1945 after being reactivated by the USAF as part of the Continental Air Command's Pacific Air Forces.
The origins of the flying Tigers can be traced back to 15 August 1942 when a detachment of 14 cadets from Clemson University formed a squadron at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio under command of Lieutenant Colonel James Moseley. On 16 August 1942, another detachment from Clemson University joined this squadron and it was redesignated as the "Winter Garden Flying Tigers." The unit drew inspiration from Japan's "AJAF" (Allied Japanned Forces) fighter units which had fought in Burma and Thailand during World War II. In October 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Moseley ordered his squadron to use Minchin Maru boats to ferry aircraft across the Yangtze River for training purposes only. In December 1942, he also ordered his squadron to form Detachment D (later renamed I) which flew experimental P-38s from Nanking Airport in China.
In early 1943, Lieutenant Colonel Moseley transferred command of I Squadron to Major General Curtis LeMay who became its commander on 1 February 1943. By May 1943, LtColMosesley had operational control over all three squadrons within I Wing: A Squadron (based at Kunming), B Squadron (based at Chengkonan Army airfield), and C Squadron(based at Yulin). As Allied forces approached mainland China they began providing escorts for Japanese bombers attempting to bomb American cities such as New York City and Los Angeles but no damage was done due to lack of bombsights or limited fuel stocksposed against such attacks by Japan’s best pilots while their planes were still using their home base fields in Japan; however Bomber Command believed that these attacks could have major consequences should they succeed in hitting America’s military installations inside China; accordingly, Major General LeMay made plans for III Fighter Wing based out of Wuhan Luanda AB near Hainan Island with 50 P-38L/40L Thunderbolts plus reserve pilot numbers should either enemy fighters act upon our formation or any other causes prevent us from engaging them effectively.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is one of the most powerful air forces in the world. The USAF has over 123,000 personnel and operates more than 350 aircraft. It is a major player in many global conflicts and is considered to be one of the main providers of humanitarian assistance to war-torn areas.
The USAF was formed on July 17, 1947, as the USAAF Reserve Command. On September 25, 1949, it became an active branch of the US military with its own unique system of officer corps and organization. The USAF today employs around 122,700 officers and enlisted members who serve in more than 330 different positions across all three branches of service.
One of the primary purposes of the USAF is to provide airpower for our nation’s security interests worldwide. In addition to providing aerial refueling services for American bombers during wartime, RAF Tornado jets are used by NATO member states for air-to-air combat missions against asymmetric threats such as Isis insurgents and terrorists.thus making it one of America’s most important strategic partners worldwide
The first gift given to the Winter Garden community was a machine that made ice cream. This machine was given to the community by Lt. Col. George Wetherbee of the 8th Air Force in 1945.
Winter Garden, Florida is located in the panhandle of Florida and has a population of just over 137,000. It’s an agricultural town with a number of small businesses and farms. The climate is mild to warm year-round and there are many trees and flowers in the area. The town was founded in 1892 by two brothers, Frank and Augustus Winter Garden. It’s named for the winter gardens that were built nearby.
The Winter Garden area includes a number of shopping streets as well as several smaller parks. There are also a few colleges and schools within driving distance, making it an ideal place to live or visit during good weather conditions. In addition to its close proximity to major metropolitan areas, Winter Garden offers a great deal of personal freedom when it comes to living your life outside the formal rules set by society.
Air Force gift history can be traced back to World War I, when the United States entered the war with America’s first air force. The Air Service was established on October 1st, 1917 and had three primary missions: To provide strategic bombardment of enemy positions; To conduct aerial reconnaissance; and To supply the army by providing transport aircraft.
The first airforce planes were purchased from Curtiss-Wright in 1918 and these were known as “Curtiss P-6As”. These planes had no engines and were mainly used for observation. In 1919, Curtiss submitted a proposal for a new type of plane, which was christened the C-1A Skystreak. This plane had four engine installed in two sets of tandem wing configuration and could fly at high altitudes. The development of this plane is credited to Major General Sidney Kimmel who was then Commander of American Expeditionary Forces in France. On July 14th 1920, the US Congress appropriated $2 million for the purchase of 50 C-1As and these were delivered to Europe on September 19th 1920.
After World War II ended in 1945, American military aviation underwent a major change with jet Aviation becoming prevalent throughout most branches of service within just a few years (1945 - 1971). This allowed USAF pilots more latitude than their counterparts in other armies in terms flying speed, range and altitude limitations imposed by jet technology at that time. Consequently, many USAF gifts during this time period are considered unique or even strange examples that reflect how USAF culture has evolved since those days (e.g., B-52 Stratofortress bomber) It should be noted that while jets have certainly played an important role within USAF gifting over the past few decades – Gift items still make up avery small percentage (~10%) of total assets given to servicemen/women

Winter Garden is located in central Florida, about 25 miles east of Jacksonville. It was founded by Hugh Lawson in 1836 as a small settlement on the banks of the St. Johns River. In 1839, Lawson moved Winter Garden to its present location, and developed it into a fashionable resort community with rich natural resources and abundant amusement park attractions. The town prospered for many years, until World War II caused the economy to decline. After the war,Winter Garden quickly recovered and became an important tourist destination, hosting major events such as the 1972 Winter Olympics.
