Winter Garden, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. The population was 3,787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1881 by Scottish immigrants and their families who had come overland from Scotland to escape the potato famine. They named their new settlement after an artificial pond in Winter Garden, England. The town started as a farming community with farmers growing soybeans, corn, potatoes and other crops. In 1915 the state of Florida purchased Winter Garden from its original owners for $10 per acre. At that time it was one of only a few towns in Florida not subject to federal water management regulations based on riverine soil types which made it difficult for agriculture and industry to flourish. In 1967 Winter Garden became the official seat of government for Polk County and has been that location ever since. The county courthouse was built in 1927 and is still used today as a court room. Winter Garden contains many interesting historical landmarks such as: -The Winter Garden Volunteer Fire Department Museum - This museum tells the story of how the Volunteer Fire Department has helped protect people and property in Winter Garden since its creation in 1911 -The First Presbyterian Church - Built in 1881 this beautiful church features beautiful stained glass windowsills and is one of most significant examples of Gothic Revival architecture found anywhere -Stroud House - A former plantation house that now houses several businesses including a beauty salon, restaurant and gift shop -Jacksonville's oldest golf course (1892), known today as Palm Beach Country Club
