Winter Garden is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,967 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Coffee has been brewed in Winter Garden since 1892 when Frederick Wiltz founded the First National Coffee Company. The first coffee beans were roasted in a small room on Elm Street known as the "Willetz Roastery". In 1936, Harry Potter and his wife Nellie bought the business from Fred Wiltz's widow and started brewing their own coffee under their name, Harry Potter & Sons Coffee Co., which still operates today. In 1978, Winter Garden became an official city of Jacksonville and incorporated its own water system which made it possible to brew coffee pot-to-pot style without having to go through a local authority. By 1982, Harry Potter had sold all his assets to PBF Energy who continued operations as PBF Harry Potter & Sons Coffee Inc until 1994 when they merged with JSC Holdings Corporation (a subsidiary of IBM) and changed their name to IBM Harry Potter & Sons Coffee Inc., later changed back to Sarah Lee Corp., before finally becoming an independent company again in 2006. They continue production today at their current site off Old Third Road in Winter Garden. Winter Garden is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The community was founded in 1892 by prominent Floridian Isham Lewis and his wife Anna. It lies on the eastern edge of the Leon County Agricultural District, which includes much of today's Winter Garden. The community has since become a popular retirement and travel destination for people from all over the Southeast. The earliest mention of Winter Garden comes from oral tradition, as winter garden trees were grown there during the freeze-up months. In 1892, Anna Lewis donated 5 acres (2 ha) of her family's farmland to be used as a winter garden with access to Lake Okeechobee. By 1899, the population had increased to 50 residents and two churches were built: First Baptist Church in 1901 and Second Baptist Church in 1903. In 1907, James Hargrave purchased 780 acres (300 ha) of land north of Winter Garden from Anna Lewis for $2 million dollars. This became known as Hargrave Gardens after James Hargrave's son-in-law, Harry Payne Whitney who served as its first president and general manager from 1941 until his death in 1977. The area now known as Winter Garden was annexed by Winter Park in 1934 but retains its own municipality status. During World War II, many residents assisted with military service through local organizations such as Home Guard or JUICE (Justice Unit Employed In Defense).
