Winter Garden, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Garden is located on State Road 892 north of Kissimmee and east of Lake Buena Vista. Winter Garden was founded in 1872 as a small farming community near present-day Winter Garden City by two brothers, George and Lewis Wiegand. They named their town after the garden they had seen in England while on a family trip there in 1851. At first, the town consisted only of a few log homes built by owner Elias Junker. In 1876, Wiegand Brothers bought out Junker’s share in the town and started to build larger homes which are still standing today including one known as “The White House” which now houses the Winter Garden Chamber of Commerce. In 1895 when state legislator Ira Hockaday moved from Jacksonville to live in Winter Garden for some time he ordered all streets within the city limits changed from wide shoulders to straight blocks so that everyone could get along better and make more progress together as a community rather than having different areas that were almost impossible to get access to because they were on higher ground or had tight corners where no one could go without getting lost or Killed). By 1907, most people living within the city limits were farmers who raised chickens, pigs and cattle; however ice cream production began soon afterwards when an old dairy farmer named John Akins opened his first truck stop next door to what is now known as Empire Ice Cream Company precursor to Walt Disney’sarinas later established there also In 1924 local builder/contractor Harry Weldon completed construction on what would eventually becomeavalanche slide (now part of Universal Studios theme park). Winter Garden is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Dade Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by citrus growers in 1907 as Winter Garden ( pronounced "WIN-dervik") after a severe winter. The name comes from the fact that most of the trees in Winter Garden are still grown today; many of them were brought over from Orlando. The first post office opened in 1909, and the first store was built on Floridian Avenue in 1911. In 1916, when it became county seat for Broward County, Winter Garden had a population of 1,500 people and consisted of only 15 buildings. On December 12, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge dedicated two miles (3 km) east of downtown Winter Garden an interchange on Interstate 95 called "The Coolidge Tollway". This toll road helped to spur development around milepost 327 where now stands White Sands Boulevard South Shopping Center and other businesses within the boundaries of today's Winter Garden Township and its predecessor communities: Indian Wells Lakeside Village (now part of Coral Gables), Coral Springs Ridge Estates (now part of Doral), Belle Glade Rancho Park (now part of Plantation), Highland Park (now part of Sunrise). At this interchange also existed what is now known as State Road 527 which connected Coconut Creek with Everglades City before being truncated near Walt Disney World Resort until it was extended all the way to developments north of Homestead Road/State Road 441 in 1991-1992. In 1990s new housing developments started to develop south off US 191 opposite State Road 441 known then as SW 95th Street between Interstates 95 & 95A North into present day SpringHill Village just southwest cornerSW 192nd Street between SR 441 & I-95 exit 307A There were plans calls for rerouting I-95 traffic coming out onto SR 441 so it would go through current SpringHill Village instead but these never came to fruition as development expanded further into present day SpringHillVillage
Winter Garden was founded in 1837 by Captain George Winter. The town was named for the fact that the winter climate is so mild that trees can grow in it. It became a county seat in 1889 and is now part of Kissimmee.
