Winter Garden, Florida is a town located in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach–Escambia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Garden is home to the Winter Garden Mall and several smaller stores and restaurants. The first permanent settler in Winter Garden was Captain John Purdy in 1824. He named his land after his wife's family name: Winter Garden Township. The first store in Winter Garden opened in 1828 and was called the General Store of Captain John Purdy and Company. In 1829, George Waddell established a blacksmith shop on Third Street which became known as the Whitesmith Shop of George Waddell and Company. In 1836, Capten John Purdy donated land for a school which eventually became Miami University School of Law (now University of Miami). In 1840, Drury Atherton donated land for a Mechanics Institute which later became Miami University Hospital (now McMicken Hospital). A large plantation by Isaac Watts was granted to Masterman & Moore in 1850 and soon became known as "The Christmas Tree". Mrs. Watts moved her plantation to what is now Winter Garden in 1865 when she changed its name from "Arabian Pine" to "Winter Garden". Mr .Moore then donated an acreage next door to their Plantation to become what is now Coral Gables Boulevard/United States-Florida Overseas Highway 1A/State Road 9A (). In 1889, Milton Hines founded one of the first businesses ever here - The Hines Grocery Co.. When Volusia County was created it included parts of today'sWinter Gardens including present day Spring Hill Village as well as much of what are now Coral Gables Boulevard/U S-F Overseas Highway 1A/State Road 9A

Winter Garden is a town in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,601 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The name Winter Garden comes from two different places: one near Kissimmee and another about 12 miles east in Winter Park. Both were named for General Winfield Scott and his wife Lady Sarah (née Stuart). The first settler to arrive in Winter Garden was John Aitken who came with his family on horseback in 1837. He built a log cabin on the banks of the St Johns River and named it Aitken's Cabin after himself and his father-in-law, James Oglethorpe Aitken. Other early residents included Colonel Godfrey Keyes (1838), Drury Copley (1841), Wm Hite (1843), Alfred Loomis (1845), Nathaniel Chandler (1846) and Amos Kendall Copley (1848). In 1851 Major John Sibley bought 640 acres of land just north of town from Captain Jno Easley for $2 per acre which he donated to Pasco County as part of what is now known as theWinter Garden Agricultural Experiment Station property gift program. After years of surveying and campaigning by Sibley, Town Commissioners voted unanimously to incorporate as a village on November 3, 1873 under the name "Winter Garden." During World War II many men from nearby Lakeland worked at Plant V Hospital at White Sands Proving Ground helping develop atomic weapons technology during Operation Crossroads. Some people still live close by in properties like Hamlet Drive or Bear Run Road where they harvested fruit or took care of animals during war times
