Winter Garden is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando – Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Winter Garden was organized on December 5, 1892 after a vote by the citizens of Seminole and Osceola Counties to create a village within their respective counties. The name "Winter Garden" came from a popular song written by Arthur Godfrey and published in 1912. The first store in Winter Garden was opened in 1903 by Wm. Hargrave and his wife Gertrude Crouse. A post office was established at Winter Garden on November 9, 1907. By 1920, there were six businesses in the town: two stores (Walsh Bros., Grocery) and four residences: three single family homes (Hargrave’s Store, Mrs. Grouse’s House), one duplex (1905-07 John Pritchard house), and one doublesided cottage (1894-96 Anna Beardsley house). The Winter Garden area was first settled by the Seminoles in the early 1800s. This region became part of Florida after the United States acquired it from Spain in 1821. The area was named for a tree that grew near the Winter Garden Inn, which had been established as a transient lodging in 1793. In 1836, President Andrew Jackson ordered all Indian titles and land possessions taken away from the Seminole tribe so they could not continue to resist American rule. The Seminoles were eventually relocated to Oklahoma and West Virginia.
