Payne and has been run by the Payne family ever since. Winter Garden is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The city was founded by settlers from Germany in 1834 and named for the Wintergarden Hotel, which had been built two years earlier. The first post office in Winter Garden was established in 1835. During the American Civil War, Confederate General Pee Wee Crayton ordered his brigade to march through Winter Garden on their way south to Fort Donelson. A plaque unveiled at the intersection of US 1 and McFadden Boulevard commemorates this event. In 1865, Anna Wigington donated land to make room for a school building and there would be three schools operated within Winter Garden until 1928 when it merged with Jacksonville to form one municipality under the name of Jacksonville-Winter Garden. In 1937-38 work began on construction of what is now known as City Hall Park across from State Street downtown; this park would eventually become home to both Municipal Court Courts and City Hall itself (now called City Hall annex). In 1962-63 an ice rink was constructed at City Hall Park adjacent to Wesleyan University Fieldhouse; Ice Hockey has been played here ever since! Political subdivisions within Winter Garden were created during its early days: Jackson Heights Municipality on January 1, 1912 and Sunrise Townships on February 14th 1922 (later annexed into Spring Hill). These areas were considered special economic development zones that enjoyed tax breaks and other incentives awarded by local governments in order to lure businesses or individuals thereto. After annexation into Jacksonville proper all these areas became municipal corporations with their own elected leaders - including street cleaning services being provided by Streets Department employees! On November 15th 1984 a fire destroyed most of what remain of Old City Hall Annex located just east side of State Street between 2nd Avenue South and 4th Avenue South - effectively wiping out any remaining vestige of community spirit or history associated with this once vibrant district! NewCityHallAnex opened up right behind it providing much needed housing for current residents while still preserving some remnants from our past...Today you can find many beautiful homes that were either taken down for new construction or left vacant due to lack of interest from homeowners/ developers etc., but don’t forget about those historical buildings such as OldCityHallAnex!
Winter Garden, Florida was founded in 1851 by General James Wilkinson. The town was named for Lieutenant Governor of Florida, John C. Winter. The first post office in the town was opened in 1853. In 1865, Winter Garden became a county seat and the name changed to Winter Garden County on November 3, 1888. On May 1, 1925, the county merged with Lake County to form Orange County.
