Winter Garden is a city in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The land that would become Winter Garden was first settled by European settlers in 1827. In 1838, a group of Seminole Indians led by Chief Osceola moved from their traditional winter encampment on the banks of the Stonington River to what is now Winter Garden. They founded a village called Toccoa on some uplands just north of present-day downtown Winter Garden. After two years, they abandoned the town and returned to their hunting grounds near Tallahassee. A few weeks after they left, however, rumors began circulating among local Native Americans that American Indian traders were planning to establish a junction onthe west coast between Havana and Tampa Bay; this would allow goods brought overland through Indian Territory to reach markets in both cities. The choice of name for their new settlement suggeststhat its founders anticipated these plans: They chose "Winter Garden" because it was cold enough during winter months not to require clothing but warm enough so that plants could grow without frost or snow coverings. The first white settlers arrived in 1840 with James Hogg as leader and James Pemberton as interpreter from Fort Meade (now Jacksonville). They built homes along Flagler Avenue and soon started trading with Native Americans who had land nearby along the Stonington River. In 1843, Mayor John Jernigan Sr., owner of an adjacent tract of land east of Flagler Avenue where today's Summerlin neighborhood stands, offered his lot for sale for $500 per acre ($20 per family). Five men bought it – Hogg, Pemberton (senior partner), George Washington Payne (junior partner), Samuel Boulware (seaman), and Augustus Woodward – founding members of what would become known as The Party Series Incorporated CompanyLimited which operated ironworks on the property until 1865 when it became part of Gulf Power Co.; later renamed Gulf Power Corporation; then BP Exploration & Production Corp., before being sold to CNOOC Ltd., Nexen Energy Group LP and TransCanada Pipeline Co..
