Winter Garden is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–Aurora metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Winter Garden were Captain John Smith and his party on May 6, 1692. The Spanish name for Winter Garden was "Finca de la Virgen" (vineyard of the Virgin). A post office called Winter Garden was established in 1824, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1896, Leland Stanford purchased from J.C. Penney a tract of land which he renamed Stanford Gardens after himself and his wife Lady JaneStanford. Today's Winter Garden Stadium was built on that same parcel in 1926 as the home field of Orange Park High School football team before moving to its current location in 1951; it has been used as a softball and baseball stadium by many different teams over the years. It also served as the home field for both local high school soccer teams (the Buccaneers from 1925-1927 and then from 1949-1951) until 1984 when they moved to nearby Olympic Park After World War II ended, much development took place within Winter Garden due to its strategic location as an important crossroad connecting two key Interstate highways: I-75 north to Jacksonville and I-4 south to Pensacola Bayou Bridgehead In 1955, Spring Lake became an incorporated village adjacent to Winter Garden when it combined with neighbouring Indian Harbour Village . Winter Garden is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Winter Garden was founded in 1892 by James Hogg and his wife Anna Valley as a winter resort for citrus growers. The first Post Office opened in 1893. In 1916, the name changed to Winter Garden Station to avoid confusion with nearby Palm Beach Gardens which had also been founded that year. The community experienced significant growth during World War II when it became an airbase used by the United States Air Force. After the war, development continued with businesses such as Lockheed Martin and Sears Roebuck opening their stores within the community limits. During that time, many Brazilian immigrants came to Winter Garden and started families there. Today, much of what made Winter Garden so attractive has been lost due to 21st century development projects: most notably Interstate 5 which cuts through the community center and destroyed several buildings; a golf course being built on top of an old munitions plant; and construction of Interstate 4 making access difficult or impossible for many residents. However, some notable features still remain such as its restored original streetcar system (now run by volunteers) and its rich history dating back more than 100 years

The first store in Winter Garden was built on First Avenue near the present day courthouse. In 1903, Edwin Winter donated a million dollars to help build a new courthouse and library. The town's first post office opened in 1907. In 1916, the name of the town was changed to Jacksonville for political reasons because of disagreements over whether it should be called Winter Garden or Jacksonville Beach.
