The U.S. Navy’s Winter Garden Naval Station was activated on December 8, 1941 in preparation for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The station’s first commanding officer, Rear Admiral Harry S. Truman, helped to organize and lead the effort to build and equip the navy during World War II. The Naval Station played an important role in American naval strategy during World War II and continues to play a significant role in naval operations today. During the Cold War, the Winter Garden Naval Station was home to one of America’s most powerful fleets: the guided-missile destroyer USS Porter (DDG-71) and nuclear submarines USS Groves (SSN-726) and USS Scranton (SSN-853). The stations also hosted Helicopter Squadron One (HS1), which operated two Sikorsky CH-47 Chinook helicopters from 1947 until 1987.
