Winter Garden, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,977 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood metropolitan area. The name Winter Garden comes from the fact that during winter months most of the trees and plants in this area are growth arrested due to lack of water or too cold temperatures. The first permanent settler in Winter Garden was Fenton Keyes who arrived on October 10, 1837. He laid out a farmstead on what is now Northwest 3rd Street and Meridian Avenue. In 1838 he married Anna Maria Morey from Cutler Creek Plantation near Clearwater Beach. As early as 1840 there were five families living in Winter Garden: Keyes, Morey, Hennessey, Maynard and Witherspoon. On February 4th of that year Josephine Kapp came overland from Mobile with her family and established an agricultural plantation west of Winter Garden on what is now East 2nd Street between Northeast 8th Avenue and Northeast 11th Avenue

The name changed to Winter Garden due to the freezes during the winter. At first, the people used heated huts for warmth but eventually built their own homes. In 1887, a post office was established in Winter Garden and soon after, a school was also established. The townspeople were so successful that they decided to incorporate as a city in 1912. In 1954, an airport was established in Winter Garden and soon after, it became one of the busiest airports in Florida. That same year, the city annexed neighbouring communities of Dunnellon and Belle Glade. Today, Winter Garden is one of the most vibrant cities in South Florida with all types of businesses and residents living together in close-knit communities.
