Winter Haven is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Georgia and Alabama who came to what is now Jacksonville to find a new home after being driven out of their previous land. The first store opened in 1882 and the first school was built in 1885. Winter Haven grew rapidly during the early 20th century thanks to its location on the east coast of Florida and its status as an agricultural center. During World War II, many residents served in the military or took jobs in local factories; however, most of these residents left after Victory Over Japan (1945). After V-J Day, many businesses closed and few people remained in Winter Haven; however, it slowly rebuilt itself over the next few decades as a bedroom community for Jacksonville with Strongsville serving as its main commercial center. In 1998, Winter Haven became an incorporated municipality and annexed much of annexed Strongsville into the town limits
