The Coast Guard Academy in Winter Park, Florida is where the United States Coast Guard’s officer training program begins. The academy offers a four-year degree in law enforcement and marine safety education, which allows officers to serve on inland waterways and on the Great Lakes. In 1980, Captain Don Haney received a watch as part of an award honoring service members who had made great contributions while serving with distinction overseas or within the United States Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserve Forces since 1978. Winter Park is a city in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The city was named for Edwin Winter, an early settler and developer who donated land to the City of Orlando in 1892. The first permanent residents arrived in 1892 when Edwin Winter donated land to the City of Orlando as part of his donation to the community. By 1902, Winter Park had become a thriving community with over 100 homes and businesses. In 1907, Edwin Winter's grandson gift $100,000 to help develop other areas within the city limits including downtown and Spring Lake Estates (now known as North Central). This donation helped support many aspects ofWinter Park's growth such as education and infrastructure development until it was demolished in 1967 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Buddy Dyer. In 1967-1968 during Mayor Buddy Dyer's administration new developers purchased freehold property on Northwest First Street from Mrs Mary Jane Pritchard for $1 million which would later become known as South Central Avenue Development Corporation (SCDC). After years of planning and research CDC constructed one of America’s first high-rise apartment buildings - specifically designed for winter weather - called "The Ark". At that time it was one of only two high rise apartments built in what is nowWinter Park outside Oflando proper; also being built by SCDC were Vineland Place & The Plaza Towers on International Drive which opened in 1978. Winter Park, Florida is a small town in the panhandle of Florida. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County. The name Winter Park comes from the winter season here; because much of the region is covered in snow, people refer to it as "The City of No Snow". The first person to settled in what is now Winter Park was Nicholas Pierre Brisson and his family in 1794. At that time, it was just a small post office with a handful of settlers and no means of heating or cooling their homes other than an open fire on Christmas night. By 1837, there were over 125 residents living in Winter Park and its surrounds when A.G. Hartman platted out what would become known as Winter Park Township on December 6, 1837 - one day after Christmas! In 1892, Wanda Laughlin opened her first grocery store in what would later become known as downtown Winter Park. In 1924, Mrs. Harry Sievers established the First Methodist Church which still meets today inside the old Shell gas station on Main Street (now Business Avenue). Winter Park was founded in 1912 by Colonel John H. Winter and his wife, Belle Winter. The city's first school was built in 1915, and the first post office opened in 1916. In 1917, the town annexed neighboring Clearwater. In 1928, Winter Park became a city and its first mayor was Mrs. Beryl A. Purdy. The city hall was built in 1935 and is still used today as the municipal building for the City of Winter Park. In 1938, Snowbirds from South Carolina came toWinter Park to winter before moving on to other locations in Florida during the early part of World War II. This initial influx of tourists helped to spur development within the town, which included the construction of a new shopping mall (the modern-day Sears) and an ice rink (now called "The Ice Palace"). In 1951, Winter Park annexed neighbouring Gladesville into its municipality; this annexation made it one of only two cities in Florida that had both a Municipal Council and an Mayor/Council form of government at once! The following year saw another growth spurt as residents started developing their own businesses outside of the municipally-owned services such as schools or libraries; this led to what is now known as Snowbird Towne Center being developed across three blocks south of downtown with over 100 businesses currently located therein! In 1976, Hurricane Donna caused significant damage to much of central Florida including parts ofWinter Park; however, due to donations from local citizens (some still living within Tornado Alley), reconstruction began immediately and has continued ever since withstanding allbeaten budget requests! restoration work inside City Hall even continues into 2017! Since then, Summerlin Village has also been added adjacent to Downtown along Eubank Road - giving residents yet again choice in their community amenities while still allowing easy access by busloads OF people each day during summer months!
