Winter Park is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. Winter Park was founded by two brothers, George and Alonzo Winter on November 17, 1892. It began as a hunting and fishing camp for farmers in central Florida. In 1907, the town moved to its current location on 281 acres (128 hectares) of forest land north of Kissimmee after being bought from a sugarcane plantation by Mr. Elisha Burcham who donated it to the townspeople as an act of philanthropy. The original home of Winter Park was built in 1909 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history including annexation by Orlando in 1959; becoming a majority-Hispanic city with Spanish residents in 1990; experiencing significant growth following World War II when military veterans returned to Winter Park and founded businesses such as Home Depot; reaching its current size through annexations by other municipalities over time such as Plantation Lake and Sunrise Manor; and most recently witnessing significant development due to plans for an airport within the city limits which is currently under construction
Winter Park was founded on December 12, 1892 by John A. Winter and his wife, Anna L. Winter. It became a city in 1912 and was renamed to its current name on January 1, 1925. On February 26, 1924, the City of Winter Park annexed the unincorporated communities of Golden Gate and Highlands. The annexation created a new city government with its own mayor and City Council.
