Winter Park is a town located in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first person to live in Winter Park was Elisha Salyer in 1872. The name Winter Park comes from a time when there were no natural resources and people hunted for game near the present day intersection of US-4 and Armour Boulevard. In 1886, Wm Henson bought 640 acres (247 hectares) of land just east of downtown and named it Winter Park after himself and his family. In 1901, the National Electric Railway built a branch line into Winter Park from Jacksonville to serve as an access point for settlers coming westward on their cattle drives during the Gold Rush era. A large number of pioneer families moved to Winter Park during this time period; many are buried at nearby Elmwood Cemetery or elsewhere in Marion County. One of most famous residents of Winter Park was Lake Winnipesaukee's namesake Wiley Post who lived here from 1893 until his death in 1936. He made significant contributions to both local politics and business both before and after World War I, when he founded First National bank in Jacksonville Beach. In 1926, it became a municipality and in 1930, it annexed land to the northwest side of Miami that included parts of what are now Northwest Dania and South Biscayne counties.
