Winter Park was founded in 1892 as a small trading post on the banks of the Kissimmee River. In 1923, it became an incorporated city and in 1959 became part of Sanford when that town was annexed by Winter Park. The name "Winter Park" comes from nearby Fort Worth, Texas, which had been named after General Winthrop Scott's winter encampment there in 1843-44. The Tampa Bay region was first settled by Spanish colonists in what is now Winter Park during the mid-1700s; they built a fort there to protect their land against British expansionist efforts. On December 12, 1893, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation creating Winter Park as a separate town within Polk County under the jurisdiction of Lakeland; it seat may still be found today at 2nd Street and Orange Avenue NW.). The growth of tourism in South Florida during the early 20th century led to an increase in business activity throughout much of Central Florida including Winter Park; this helped contribute to its rapid development over time. During World War II, many residents moved into Cypress Hills due to its strategic location for aircraft manufacturing and airfields near Jacksonville and Daytona Beach; these businesses thrived until later years when military bases closed down and jobs away from home evaporated. Winter Park is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Park was founded in 1895 by John A. Love and his brother-in-law, Wm. E. Love. The town has since grown to include over 15 miles (24 km) of streets and a total of 45 buildings including 11 schools and 20 businesses. In 2006, Winter Park topped Forbes' list of "America's Best Place To Live" as well as being named theBest Place to Work in America by Inc.[1] The first settler in Winter Park was John A. Love who arrived with his family on December 3rd, 1895 from New York City[2]. John A., his wife Charity (née Chilton), their three children: Edwin C., Anna M., and John J., and their stepson Harry moved into what is now known as blocks 9 through 12 on South Hermitage Road near the present day intersection of State Road 761 and Hermitage Boulevard[3]. Christmas 1896 saw another group arrive - nine men under the leadership of Captain Charles Fenton - who set up camp for the winter on an elevated tract about one mile east of where South Hermitage Road meets US Highway 17 today[4]. American Indian Chief Petchowaiyankee had long been living near this area and reported seeing white settlers coming ashore all season[5], but no contact was made until October 2nd when Lieutenant George Armstrong sent out a party led by Captains James Henson (of HMS Bounty)[6] to investigate claims that humans were trading goods with Indians[7]. From this initial contact little else is known other than our current understanding that these early pioneers were friendly people seeking passage across international waters without incident or damage done to property or persons
