In the 1920s and 1930s, Winter Park was home to a large military installation known as Camp Blanding. The camp was located on County Road 9 north of Interstate 4, just outside of the city limits of Winter Park. The first use of Camp Blanding was in 1924, when it was used as a training ground for artillerymen. After World War II, Camp Blanding served as an airbase for the Air Force and later the Marines. In 1969, Camp Blanding became home to Fort Bragg and then to Winter Park Army Base before being closed in 1992. Today, remnants of Camp Blanding can be found throughout downtown Winter Park. Among these is a small piece of concrete that once stood at the base of one of the former fortifications at Camp Blanding. This remnant is also significant because it is one of only two remaining pieces from Florida's early military history. The city had two golf courses- one being built by George Pompano III and the other by Harry Vardon- until it closed in 1954 when it merged into Jacksonville. A new golf course was built in Winter Park in 1957 by then Mayor Bernard Ziegler and has been open every year since then except for one interruption due to World War II; that event took place at nearby Cypress Hills Golf Club which reopened after the war. In 1984, Winter Park annexed Lakeland which made it officially a municipality within the town limits although residents continue to use Township titles such as "Mayor" or "Councilmember". On October 1, 2007, Summerlin (in Broward County) annexed Winter Park making it an entirely separate municipality with its own mayor and councilmembers
