The first group of USAF personnel moved to this area in 1947 and started what is now known as the Wright-Patterson AFB School of Aviation. In 1969, after more than 50 years of service, the Kelley AFB Annex was opened in order to support Bombardment Wing Fifteenth Air Force. Since then, other annexes have been added to support different wings and squadrons. Today, there are major facilities located at WPDAFB (Wright-Patterson AFB), KGAH (Kelley AF), and RAFLEX (Redstone Arsenal). The town has a population of approximately 4,500 residents and is the county seat for Polk County. Winter Springs is home to the Florida State University and the Clinique de la Mer. The name “Winter Springs” comes from two words – “winter” and “springs” – which are used interchangeably to describe the location where the town was founded. The history of Winter Springs can be traced back to 1892 when J.P. Morgan decided to establish a small community in what is now Polk County, FL for himself and his family members who had come westward from New York City on business ventures related to railroads and slavery sales. At that time, Polk County was one of only four counties in Florida that did not have an elected government with its own Legislature responsible for passing laws regulating commerce within its borders In order to provide leadership on behalf of this new community, Mrs. JamesonMorgan appointed her brother John Prentice as first mayor In 1896, Mr., Morgan donated land to build a courthouse and jail which would serve as winter quarters for local officials during the summer months The original cost of this edifice was $2,000 which was raised through subscription items such as postcards sent out by citizens By 1907, there were 2 gas stations/cafeterias/bars open in Winter Springs with 24 streetlights Two years later (1909), Wnorris Bros., hardware store opened followed by Joe's Pizza (now Papa John's) one year later .In 1911-12 construction began on War Memorial Hospital with funding provided by Edward Hoxie III who served as Governor of Florida at that time By 1913-14 all public buildings including the hospital had been completed .At that time it became known as simply Winter Springs .In 1916 Drs Pepper introduced their softdrinks here first
The city of Winter Springs, Florida was founded in 1892. The city is named after Dr. John Wesley Winter, who donated land to the city. In 1934, the City of Winter Springs annexed the neighboring village of Amelia Island.
