The Winter Springs, Florida Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The unit was activated in 1916 and served Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery during the war. In 1921, the regiment was renamed the Florida Army National Guard and became a full time military unit. Winter Springs is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settler in Winter Springs was Elias Coles who built a cabin on land that now includes the Coles Park subdivision in 1855. A post office called Winter Springs was established in 1872, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907, Mrs. Lillie Broughton donated 6 acres (2 ha) of land to the city for use as an open-air park with baseball diamond, skating rink and other recreational amenities. The donation also included $1,000 cash for city expenses associated with setting up the park and maintaining it over time. In 1912, Mayor John Sargent dedicated the park to residents of Sanfordville who had helped support him during his mayoral campaign against incumbent Belle Boyd. In 1916, Cleveland Giddings purchased 1/4 acre (0.16 ha) of property adjacent to what is now Winter Springs Boulevard for $5 per acre (0.28 ha). He named his property "Giddings Place" after his father-in-law George Washington Giddings Sr., a Sanfordville resident and captain in the Confederate army during the American Civil War who lost an arm at Battle of Gettysburg while serving as a lieutenant colonel under General Robert E Lee
