The community was founded in 1881 by John W. Winter and his wife Lillie Gentry Winter as a summer resort on the now-defunct Big Cypress Plantation. In 1886, Winter Springs became an incorporated village when it amalgamated with neighboring Newberry to form what is now Monroe County. In 1934, after Winter Springs lost its water source due to rock mining operations located near present day Spring Hill, the village council voted to annex Spring Hill so that while Winter Springs would still have some water available it could not rely solely on springs for its drinking and irrigation needs. Winter Springs was founded in 1892 by John A. Shively and his wife, Emma. The community was named for the winter season, which at the time meant a shorter growing season because of the long freezes that occurred during the year. Winter Springs quickly became a popular summer tourist spot and had its own post office from 1893 to 1907. In 1916, Winter Springs incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly with new businesses opening up. By 1923, Winter Springs had more than 1,000 residents and was one of Florida's fastest-growing cities. In 1933, the city merged with nearby Kissimmee to form an enlarged Miami-Dade County town called Miami Beach.
