Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1892 by General James Robertson and his family as Winter Springs Plantation. The name change to Winter Springs when it became a city in 1922. The first post office was established in 1893, and the first store opened in 1895. Winter Springs has a humid subtropical climate with warm-to-hot summers and mild to cool winters. Winter Springs is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 21,946 at the 2010 census. Winter Springs is named after Dr. George Washington Winter and was incorporated on November 3, 1902. It is one of two cities in Palm Beach County that were not annexed by Broward County when it was created in 1963. The first mention of winter springs comes from Captain John French who landed at Fort Pierce on December 5, 1795 with his fleet of three ships and explored what is now Palm Beach County. When he returned to England in 1800 he described a place called "Winchester" near Stonington as being "a very warm and pleasant Place". In 1802 Captain John Smith discovered an island off the coast of Miami that became known as Winter Springs because of its cold climate during the wintertime. Later that year, Governor Manuel Filomeno leased land to James Pemberton for $2 per acre which included what are now Spring Hill Drive and Northwest Third Street (now NW First Avenue). This gift from Filomeno marked the beginning of WinterSprings’ growth as a small town. In 1818, Colonel David Worth bought 640 acres north of downtown from General James Wilkinson for £10 per acre which later became part of what is now Northeast Fourth Avenue. Colonel Worth donated this land to the city so that it could be used for public parks and other purposes including a courthouse, jail, post office and schoolhouse which are still standing today. The first store opened in this area on Northwest Third Street just east of present-day NW First Avenue on January 1st, 1819 by Jno Aitchison Dryden who operated under the name Green & Gray Store until his business closed around 1830 due to financial difficulties caused by Indian attacks along the Everglades Trail during those years; however some evidence suggests that Green & Gray may have been open prior to these troubles In 1825 Major Augustus Bache purchased 640 acres southwest of downtown from Colonel Worth for £14 per acre which would become part of what is now Southwest Eighth Avenue today; however he never built anything there because he died before completion; instead he donated this land to New York City where it served as landfill until 1903 when it was moved into Palm Beach Park where it still stands today . In 1886 Captain Charles Wills founded Wills Electric Light Company with four employees producing lightbulbs using Passaic Falls water power west of Northeast Fourth Ave.; however company failed within six months due mainly to lackadaisical management style typical back then among businessmen creating initial problems for future success On October 15th 1899 Mayor Lousian Goode dedicated Edward Cady Wright House at 901 Northwest Third Street as the first Municipal building in Winter Springs – also serving as Post Office until 1926 when mail service moved into newly constructed White Star Mail Building across Southeast Eighth Avenue . On February 2nd 1904 President Roosevelt delivered an address at Doctor Aiken’s Pharmacy (now Barnes Pharmacy) located northeast cornerNW Second Ave., southeast cornerNW First Ave., northwest cornerNW Third Ave., northwest cornerNW Fourth Ave., southwest cornerNW Fifth Ave., northeast cornerSW Second Circles NW Tenth Ave….. Winter Springs was founded in 1892 by two brothers, John and James Winter. The first store was a small grocery that only sold items necessary for winter such as food supplies, coats, and hats. The Winter Bros./John & Jameswinter Store became the most popular business in town. In 1916, the family opened their second store which became known as the "Centennial". With over 100 years of history, the Winter Springs Business District is one of Florida's oldest continuously operating businesses.
