The National Guard of Winter Springs, Florida has been in existence since 1925. The organization was first organized as the First Battalion of the Florida National Guard on December 12, 1925. The battalion was composed of soldiers from Polk County and was mobilized to help with the Spanish-American War. In 1927, the battalion became known as the Second Battalion of the Florida National Guard and served with distinction in World War II. From 1941 until 1945, during World War II, the battalion served under United States Army Forces Europe. After World War II, the battalion became known as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC). In 1951, HHC moved to Winter Springs and assumed its present name. The company is composed of soldiers from Walton County and has served in various assignments throughout its history including deployments to Korea and Afghanistan. Since its inception as a national guard unit in 1925,Winter Springs’ National Guard has played an important role in our community. Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–St Petersburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winter Springs was founded in 1892 by J.F. Hecker and his wife Anna Mills Hecker as a logging community on the banks of the Apalachicola River. At its peak it had a population of 3,000-4,000 people and was considered one of the most important logging towns in Florida because of its ample timber resources. In 1925, the Heckers sold their holdings to J..D. Pringle and his family who named it Winter Springs after themselves and added an "s" to distinguish it from other similar communities in nearby Hillsboro and Clearwater Bayou counties (now known as Jacksonville Beach/Clearwater). In 1954, Winter Springs became an incorporated town with a mayor and two commissioners appointed by the governor; at that time it still relied largely on private enterprise for much of its municipal functions such as building roads and providing services like education, health care, firefighting etc. In 1990 Winter Springs joined neighboring Kissimmee in becoming one municipalitysubject to congressional approval then ratification under Florida's Municipal Code §5-101 et seq.) Winter Springs experienced rapid growth following incorporation; during this time many new businesses were opened up including restaurants, churches/mosques, hospitals and even a theme park which opened in 1992 called ""The World's Best Place To Be A Hippo"" based on Walt Disney's cartoon character Scrooge McDuck! The popularity of this amusement park led to investment into infrastructure such as sidewalks, traffic lights and streetlights which are still visible today inside The World's Best Place To Be A Hippo complex! After more than 20 years of continuous growth local officials decided that incorporation would no longer be possible or desirable given present day boundaries; accordingly on January 1st 2000 all citizens over 21 years old were required by ordinance to become members of the town council so that government could increasingly focus on matters pertaining directly to residents rather than catering exclusively to businesses & visitors! In order forResidentsTo continue enjoying all aspects of life within their own community they also implemented an open enrollment process for select elective office holders thereby ensuring that every individual has equal access to public scrutiny & governance! As per Town Council Resolution No.(2006) effective February 1st 2006 all citizens now must provide proof OF residency before registration can begin!! This measure not only ensures fairness but eliminates any pretextual claims that those without bona fide residence may have been unfairly omitted from participation!
