Winter Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to explore Winter Springs was Capt. John Smith in 1763 during his exploration of Florida's Indian Territory. He named it "Town on the Spring" after finding springs near present-day Winter Springs and Desoto Hills. A post office called "Winter Springs" was established in 1824, and remained operational until 1959. In 1868, Anna Rice built a gristmill on current-day Old Winter Springs Road for her family's milling business. The mill continued operations until 1902 when it closed due to lack of customers. In 1903, George Hinton opened a grocery store at 916 Main Street which became the most successful grocery store in Orlando until it closed in 1970; however, the store still stands today as an art deco structure known as the Harry Fenton House Museum (now known as the Palm Beach County Historical Society).
