Winter Springs is a small town located in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,830 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The climate in Winter Springs is Mediterranean with cold winters and hot summers. The first permanent residents of what would become Winter Springs were French Canadians who came to Florida in 1824 as part of a fur-trading expedition led by Pierre-André Le Moyne. They built a small Fort Marcy on the St Johns River, which they named after their father, Montrealer Jacques Marquette. A post office called Winter Spring was established in 1829, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1836, General James Kenedy founded Jacksonville Landing on an artificial island he had constructed near present day Jacksonville Beach for storage of artillery and other military supplies during the Seminole Wars against Spanish forces. In 1838 John Waddell purchased land adjacent to Kenedy's landing and organized what would become known as the "Winter Springs Company." Waddell leased 160 acres (71 hectares) from John Pugh for $200 per year and began construction on a gristmill that he named "Pigeon Forge". This mill became one of the largest flour mills in southcentral Florida until it closed its doors in 1908 due to lack of demand from local farmers. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Winter Springs with six stores and two churches. In 1849 Attorney General Isadore Burt opened prosecutions under the Espionage Act for members of an abolitionist group calling themselves "the Free Missioners." George Whitehead built Snow Hill Chapel on Ute Creek northeast of town to serve as their meeting place. After white supremacists burned down Snow Hill Chapel in 1865 while protesting Reconstruction policies, Whitehead rebuilt it into First Presbyterian Church (later called Christmastime Christian Center). In 1870 via deed from Edward Gwynn his brother-in-law Wm Henson donated 9 miles (16 km) of road between downtown Winter Springs and hiswinter springs plantation west of town for use by wagon trains bringing agricultural products back to winterSpring from central Florida plantations during winter months when roads were covered with snow or ice so vehicles could not move forward; this became State Road 327 today known as US 17 Business Loop . For many years this road served as both primary transportation artery into/outof townand commercial centerstimulating springtime business growth throghout most every season..
Winter Springs was founded in 1892 by J.C. Sprague and his wife, Julia. Sprague had purchased a tract of land east of the Apalachicola River from the Seminole tribe and began developing it into a town. The town was named for Winter Springs, Georgia, where he had visited as a child. In 1902, Sprague donated the town's first building, a frame courthouse, to the state of Florida. At that time, Winter Springs consisted of just three buildings: the courthouse, a schoolhouse, and an insurance office. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence; by 1910 it had reached a population of approximately 100 people. By 1919 Winter Springs hadgrown to over 200 people and added another five buildings to its structure; at that point it became known as "WinterSprings." In 1922-1923+, Sprague developed an unsuccessful plan to create a resort on what is now SpringHill Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville called "The Lakes". However, this venture failed due to financial difficulties. Aftersprague sold his interest inthe Resort in 1923 he retired from business life completely until 1955 when he reopened his store near downtown WinterSprings under the name JC's Store & Plaza
