The Coast Guard Station in Zephyrhills, Florida was established on December 12, 1941. The station is one of the oldest Coast Guard stations in the United States. The station has been a part of the United States Coast Guard for over eighty years and has played an important role in keeping our nation's coast safe. In 1947, the Coast Guard Station in Zephyrhills was renamed Zephyrhills Sector Office. In 1969, the Sector Office moved to its current location at 6th Ave N and Gulf Dr S. Zephyrhills was founded by pioneers in 1833 as a trading post called Fort Payne. It first became an incorporated community in 1879. In 1912, Zephyrhills became a state-sponsored research station for air research and development at nearby Kissimmee Airport. The fortification of the town helped protect it from Seminole Indian attacks during the 19th century and early 20th century. The area now known as Zephyrhills was first settled by white men in 1833 when they arrived from Georgia to build Fort Payne near present-day Miami Beach on what is now known as Dixie Highway (State Road 9). White settlers were attracted to the fertile land around Lake Okeechobee and also wanted to avoid Seminole Indian attacks that had plagued their neighbors in Georgia over the past decade or so. The original post office was established at Fort Payne in November 1834 with Chief Justice John Marshall serving as its first postal clerk. A second post office was established at Zephyrhills on January 12, 1835 under the name of Jacksonville Landing after Major General James Jackson's landing party at that location on December 13, 1796 during his successful invasion of Haiti

It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is home to the only theme park in Florida: Zephyrhills Theme Park. The Town of Zephyrhills was platted on April 12, 1884 by Colonel C.H. Stephens with a population of seventy-six people (). The name "Zephyrhills" originated from an account given by Captain James Cook of the British Royal Navy during his first voyage around Cape Horn in 1779 as he sailed through what is now Polk County on his way to Australia: "When we arrived at night at this bay [Zephyrhills], we found many small islands lying near it; but when day broke we saw no sign of any island whatsoever." The first post office in Zephyrhills was established on July 5, 1887 (). One year later, the flour mill opened and began producing flour for local markets (). By 1912, there were two churches in town - First Baptist Church (founded 1907) and Methodist Episcopal Church (established 1910). In 1917, Jens Meyer built the first swimming pool in Florida and it quickly became one of the most popular features of Zephyrhills after prohibition ended prohibition throughout much of America. In 1924, construction started on what would become known as "Meyer's Beach" which became one of Zephyreils most popular attractions until it closed its doors in 1980 due to financial difficulties. Today remnants can still be seen today including a partially sunken dock that has been converted into a beach bar complete with restrooms and a pay phone next to it giving access to various amenities like water toys for children (.50 cents each), lifejackets for those who feel brave enough to swim (.75 cents each), and drink tickets (.25 cents each). Museum regulars are often able to purchase items like postcards ($1 per card), T-shirts (), or hats () from their Joe Meyer souvenir stand inside the museum itself while supplies last! The restaurant also offers lunch specials everyday from 11am-3pm for $6 pp plus tax & gratuity
