Zephyrhills is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first post office in Zephyrhills was established on November 3, 1892. As of the 2000 census, Zephyrhills had a population of 2,622. Zephyrhills is a small town in Putnam County, Florida. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Putnam County were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their ship "Nuovo Basile" in 1514. They charted the coast of present-day Florida and named it after Zephyrhills, a mountain in Greece that they saw on their trip. The first permanent settler in Zephyrhills was John Sibley, who built a house on what is now Main Street in 1851. He was followed by others until the early 1900s when most of the town came about through annexation from other counties. In 1906, Jacksonville's only electric streetcar line opened between Jacksonville and Zephyrhills with stops at Main Street and Washington Avenue (now US 301). This service began as an experiment to see if electric transportation could replace horse-drawn cars on rural routes. The streetcar continued until 1958 when it was replaced by bus service run by Jacksonville Transit Corporation (JTC). Zephyrhills has been home to several high school football programs over the years including: Jackson State College Panthers (1937-1945), Jacksonville Jaguars (1966-2004), and Stonington Highlanders (1983-present). In addition, several professional teams have called Zephyrhills home over the years such as the New York Yankees (1936), Boston Red Sox (2004), Tampa Bay Rays (2003), and Miami Marlins (2009-2018).
