Zephyrhills, Florida is a census-designated place (CDP) in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. Zephyrhills is located on State Road 412 northwest of Melbourne. It is part of the Palm Beach–Boca Raton–Fort Pierce metropolitan area. Zephyrhills started as an agricultural village in 1892 and became a town in 1907 when it annexed some adjacent land. The name comes from two items: "zephyrus" meaning "a whirlwind" and "hillocks" meaning "peaks". The first recorded settler in what would become Zephyrhills was George Washington Blount who arrived in 1827. A post office called Blountville was established in 1830, but no mail ever traveled there because it was within Indian Territory at the time. In 1892, Jno Burchfield built a cabin on his farm which became the nucleus of what would become Zephyrhill Village. By 1907, Zephyrhills had increased to 10 homes with a total population of 100 people. In 1916, during World War I, many soldiers came through Zephyria to rest or do their military service; they left behind their camps and families that would later form the nucleus of what would become Melbourne's community growth. On May 8th that year residents voted to rename their CDP after Rear Admiral John Halsey – USN (Ret.) for his role playing as Commodore John Fitch during the First Barbary War). The new name took effect on October 1st 1916 and has been used since then by all citizens living within its boundaries regardless of where they were born or whether they still claim affiliation with any portion of those original villages/towns from back before WWI...The old names are still remembered by some locals but not returned to often enough so that people can forget them...According to 2000 census data , there are now over 12K residents living within ZIP code 33064 who identify themselves as being from one or more pre-war villages/towns situated east or west of SR412."

Zephyrhills, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Zephyrhills was named for Zephyrus, one of the Argonauts. The first permanent settler in what is now Zephyrhills was James Ketchum in 1836. He purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) of land from Captain John Stroud and his wife Lillie for $2 per acre ($27 per km²). Ketchum built a log cabin on his farmstead which still stands today. When he died in 1839, his son James Jr., took over farming the property and erected a cotton gin on the site that still stands today. In 1844, Drury bought 320 acres (122 hectares) of land adjoining Ketchum's farmstead from James Jr., renaming it "Zephyrhills". In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered Major General Wade Hampton to take control of Fort Brooke because of Confederate skirmishes near that location. Hampton put up defenses there while moving supplies to Fort Donelson north of Tampa Bay and decided not to attack Confederate forces at Zephy Ridge instead opting to march through Wakulla Valley into Union territory instead which resulted in two dead Americans and several wounded soldiers including Lt.-Colonel Nathaniel Lyon who later became famous as an author about military life during the Civil War era. Afterward Johnson relocated Hampton's command headquarters south to Mabel Ford Prairie where it remained until its abandonment during Reconstruction in 1868 when all Federal troops were withdrawn from Florida except for a detachment under Colonel George Armstrong Custer who moved back into Alabama after burning Washington DC on April 14th 1865 less than three weeks before the end of Reconstruction and this event is known as Custer's March . The original post office called "Ocala" opened on October 26th 1861 under Postmaster General Amos Kendall with ZIP code 33419. On February 3rd 1862 Postmaster General Thomas Gentry re-opened Ocala with ZIP code 33442 giving rise to what is now known as "Zephyrhills". Zephyrhills incorporated as a municipality on January 10th 1902 following approval by referendum Voted by mail! Incorporation deadline set for January 15th 1902 but no action taken... The incorporators were J F Stephenson (First Vice President), W H Miller (Secretary), J B Sperry (Treasurer), I T Poorter (President pro tempore). According to legend, local founder James Ketchum had seen an apparition or vision of Zeus or Apollo standing between two trees atop Mount Royal while crossing Jupiter’s “lake” or river – so he named his community after this sightseeing spot - although some sources say that Buffalo Bill passed through here once upon a time too! According to legend also locals used Indian word “bohomie” meaning 'hill country' – so bohomies may have been descending upon this locale for centuries prior! There are many churches located within walking distance including Methodist Church #1; Presbyterian Church #2 & Baptist Churches: Zion Lutheran #5& 6; First Baptist Church #1 & Second Baptist Church #2 etc etc... Today very few people live within driving distance anymore due largely to modern amenities available !! We value community involvement more than ever especially thru our Open House events which attract hundreds each year...A lot has changed since then but we STILL love our name!!!
