In 1819, a man by the name of James Zephyr found land that would later become known as Zephyrhills. He named his new place after the eastern wind which he heard often in his travels. The first post office for Zephyrhills was established in 1892. In 1907, a school was constructed on what is now Park Avenue and it soon became an important stop for students travelling to nearby schools such as Winter Garden and Volusia County Schools. The school closed in 1978 but students continue to use Park Avenue today as their main artery to and from town. In 1906, local developer Waddell built what today is known as Lakeview Terrace on what was then called Griggs Street (now US 301). This development became an important shopping center for residents of Zephyrhills and neighbouring towns until it was destroyed by fire in 1972.

Zephyrhills, Florida is a town located in Pinellas County, Florida, on the east coast of the state. The population was 2,938 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Zephyrhills were Hugh and Mary Purdy who arrived in 1840 looking for land to farm. They named their settlement after Zephyrus, one of Aeschylus' characters from Prometheus Bound. In 1845, Zephyrs began receiving mail from Jacksonville and soon became a post office with ZIP code 33609. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Zephyrhills. In 1865, local citizens voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Cypress". The first mayor of Cypress was Waddell. Zephyrhills experienced some growth during World War II as many Allied soldiers camped near the town while they were engaged in battle.during this time many businesses were built including a military hospital and two airfields which remain today - Harry Hines Air Force Base and Eglin Air Force Base. In 1951-1952 new housing developments called "Homes by the Sea" dotting acres along Boca Raton's waterfront provided homes for workers commuting into nearby Tallahassee or Pensacola or larger cities such as Tampa or Orlando; these developments are now gone but their impact on community life remains visible today through commemorative plaques throughout downtown Zephyrhills. After years of steady growth (estimated to be around 10% each decade),2008 marked an abrupt halt when Census data revealed that Cypress had become one of just six communities nationally experiencing population declines (the others being Atascosa Heights (Texas), West Deptford Township (New Jersey), Bellefontaine Heights (Ohio), Springboro Township (Pennsylvania) and Farmington Hills Michigan). All other communities experienced increases since 2000 despite no corresponding change in Cypress' population size; Cypress has seen only 0.7% since 2000 however its GDP increased by 6%. One possible explanation for this sudden change could be due to changes within the Gulf Coast economy resulting from hurricane Katrina which devastated Louisiana; although much damage was done to Orleans Parish particularly areas along the Mississippi River where Lake Pontchartrain seeps into it causation cannot be ruled out completely but nonetheless it should not be ignored as another potential factor affecting both growth rates and overall stability."
