Zephyrhills is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Kissimmee-Mantua Metropolitan Statistical Area. Zephyrhills is located on State Road 97 and ZIP code 32006. The name "Zephyrhills" comes from two places—the French word for "Southern Cross" (Xavier) and thegiven name of an early settler in the area: Ebenezer Eaton. The first settlers arrived around 1836 and began to build log homes near what is now downtown Zephyrhills. By 1838, over 20 families had moved to the area and development continued until about 1860 when a railroad came through town and derailed some logs causing much damage to homes and businesses. A post office called Zephyr Hills was established in 1865, but no mail ever got to it because there was only one track available south of Jacksonville at that time. In 1871, Jno Crain built a smallhouse north of where Main Street meets US 301/SR 9 which became known as "Crain's Corner". The house still stands today next to South Lake Moyer Boulevard on CR 970 (now SR 993). In 1922, Driggs Cobb founded Surfside Hospital here which would become one of Gainesville's largest employers with more than 800 employees at its peak in 1948. In 1955-1956, Hurricane Andrew wrecked many homes throughout central Florida killing dozens of people including several children living near Bullard Creek Dam; however little has been done to repair or rebuild these structures since then due largely to politics rather than competence on either side - something that can be seen all too often across Central Florida during hurricanes season! What followed were years of government inaction as business owners lobbied for reconstruction funding while residents simply waited for their insurance claims to be processed before starting any repairs themselves - again leaving many communities without essential infrastructure such as water systems or roads for days or even weeks after a storm occurs! Finally in 2011 following community outcry over tree removal operations taking place during major storms such as Irma/Andrew I contacted both state legislators who represent my district along with Mayor Buddy Dyer and asked them directly about this issue given that I know many residents are still struggling with aftermath effects months later! After more than an hourlong meeting where I made numerous recommendations including setting up grant funding specifically towards disaster recovery efforts within our medium sized city like those seen during Katrina etc... they finally agreed to help fund some reconstructive work within our city limits in order provide some sorely needed desperately needed services! A few months later we received word that $10,000 had been awarded by state government specifically towards this project making it possible finally!! This is just one example how citizens can get involved locally & demand better accountability from those who purport To Be Responsible For Our Affairs!!!
