Zephyrhills is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first documented mention of Zephyrhills comes from a deed by Captain John Stroud to Nicolas Montresor dated October 3, 1763. In 1821 Zephyrhills was platted and named for the Italian explorer Giovanni Zephyrus Mayne. At that time it consisted of only two houses and a small store on Orange Avenue. In 1902 the town had a post office and three shops; one operated as a general store while another two served as "cafeteria" restaurants until 1978 when they closed because of lack of business support. In 1928 – after years of planning by local citizens – Zephyrhills became an incorporated village with its own government and school system. At that time it included 227 residences, eight churches (twoMethodist, four Catholic), five stores (three grocery/feed stores, one dry goods store), two banks (the First National Bank and the Citizens Trust Company), six businesses (sixKeepsakes Antiques & Collectibles Emporium in later years; Gilded CageBarbershop from 1948 to 1957; The Hecht's Department Store from 1951 to 1957; Southern Sporting Goods from 1958 to 1972) and thirteen residents who voted on village status at an election held on November 2nd following which date their incorporation took effect. By 1960 there were 428 residences in total with eighteen businesses open including ten listed above which increased during ensuing decades to 573 businesses encompassing thirty-one residences plus twenty-five students living on campus at USF Central Florida until 1997 when all programs were discontinued due to budget cuts prior to Hurricane Andrew destroying much of central Orlando). Zephyrhills, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast and has a population of about 25,000 people as of the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1917 by George W. Zephyrhills and his brothers Harry and Clarence Zephyrhills. The first permanent settler in Zephyrhills was James Hickey who arrived in 1798. James Hickey's brother John landed with him at what is now known as Point Breeze beach. From this point forward, Point Breeze would be the most important fishing spot on the coast for white men because it had both good water quality and good land for agriculture. The early settlers were primarily Irish Catholics who worked their farms and fishermen’s boats from Point Breeze beach or from nearby Fort Myers which served as an anchorage for vessels loading supplies destined for Cuba during the Spanish American War (1898-1902). After World War I, many Americans decided to move to Miami due to its economic opportunities; however, few chose to live near Ft Myers which remained one of the most important commercial ports on Key West Peninsula until it closed in 1967. In 1919, George W. Zephyrhills purchased 531 acres (2 km2) along Withrow Beach Road south of present day Fort Myers Boulevard in order to establish a community called "Zephyrhills". At that time there were no public schools or hospitals within walking distance so citizens had to bring their own children to school either by bus or boat each morning before coming home to help out on their families' farms or fisheries businesses ashore until after school started again at 3 p.m.. In 1925, Mrs Dixie Whitehead donated 1/4 acre (0.16 hectare) of land east of where present day US 41 intersects Withrow Beach Road for a Baptist church established under her name – First Methodist Episcopal Church – which remains functioning today as one of only two churches remaining with fulltime membership still ministered by women pastors in southwest Florida! This donation helped make possible the current housing developments which largely replaced traditional farm homes dating back to when residents could not build on their properties without permission from landowners! Additionally, other donations followed such as 8 rods off shore north west of present day US 41 Bridge across Toombs Bayou - donated by Mrs Jody Toombs - giving rise to Northwoods Boulevard later renamed Landing Drive after Mrs Whitehead's donation! The original name given callously “the landing place where Negroes disembarked when they got married” also became associated with bigotry long after it had been abandoned as an undesirable memory! In 1948 Charles Aiken developed what is now known as Aiken Place adjacent zone 10A), zoning that allows residential development only if all streets leading thereto are parallel within a certain radius including any street providing access thru an open space & any street leading into any golf course recess etc., approved Sept 6th 1950 during final platting meeting held prior 2 yr exterior sign erection date?Sign erected Dec 15th 1951 depicting Mr Aiken himself inside house while standing behind TV camera
