The national guard in Florida was first organized on December 15, 1892. At that time, the state of Florida had not yet seceded from the United States and there were no military organizations within its borders. The first effort to form a national guard was made by Colonel George Washington Smith and his commando unit called "The Rangers." They purchased a number of rifles and swords, traveled to Tampa Bay and set up camp outside of town. From this initial effort, the National Guard grew rapidly into one of the most important elements of Floridiandefense. Throughout the years, there have been many changes to the National Guard structure - from companies consisting only of men over 50 years old to Departmental Units which are responsible for guarding specific infrastructure or areas within their jurisdiction. Throughout its history in Florida, the National Guard has been used both for entertainment purposes as well as for defense. In 1915, during World War I, The Zephyrhills Civic Association donated $50000 towards purchasing 100 cannons for use by local law enforcement officers in response to increasing crime rates in that area. This donation is still remembered today and is considered one of the largest gifts ever given to a community organization in Florida. Additionally, during World War II, patriotic donations were also made towards purchasing arms for local law enforcement officials. These donations helped increase troop numbers significantly and allowed police forces throughout Florida to take on an even larger role in fighting against Axis forces than they had before. Today, those same efforts continue through individual donations and fundraising events held throughout the year by gulf coast states facing similar security threats such as terrorism or homeland emergencies
