Zephyrhills is a city located in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2000 census. It has the name of a Greek god who presided over the west winds and is named after Zephyr, one of the sons of Apollo. The first permanent settler in what became Citrus County was James Fenton in 1837. He built his home on present-day Fourth Street just east of First Avenue. Zephyrhills was platted on March 1, 1885 by J P O’Connor and A C Whitehurst with land purchased from John Witherspoon for $1,000. The first store in town was opened by J H Buchanan on Third Street in 1888. The first post office was established in 1886 by T M Smith with mail delivered to his house on Second Avenue. After World War II, when citrus production increased due to newly developed areas such as Interstate 95 and Everglades National Park, long-term growth began for Zephyrhills. In 1970 it had a population of 9,500; by 1990 it had reached 24,000 and today remains one of the fastest-growing cities in Florida with an annual growth rate above 2%. Today's downtown area features more than twenty businesses including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain (opened in 1992), several restaurants which have won awards (chicken enchiladas from Aloha BBQ restaurant are now served at Olive Garden), two clinics - one for pregnant women and one for pediatric patients - as well as three urgent care centers providing primary medical attention to residents outside regular health departments; seven community banks are also sponsors or members of the American Bankers Association thrift division; paramedic services are provided by CRPS ambulance service; six schools - four high school diploma/GED programs and two middle school programs - offer various educational opportunities including pre-kindergarten through high school graduation; music program provides evening classes throughout summer months

Zephyrhills, Florida is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Auburn-Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Zephyrhills can be traced back to 1836 when Captain James A. Butler and his crew were stopped by the Spanish on their way from Havana to Pensacola. They were looking for a place to land and decided on a point near what is now Zephyrhills. When General Andrew Jackson was elected President in 1828, he ordered all American frigates based in Mobile Bay to be sent to Cuba because he felt that Spain had taken advantage of America's weak military system during the Mexican War. This order led to many American sailors being lost at sea and this caused many Americans in Florida to feel insecure about whether they would ever recover from Jackson's presidency. However, once Polk became President, he began working on rebuilding America's military system which led to more ships being sent back home and new jobs being created in Jacksonville and Tampa due to the increased trade between those cities and Cuba. In 1835, Captain Butler again stopped by Zephyrhills on his way from Havana to Pensacola because there was no other spot available for him with such good water access as this location did. He anchored upriver from where today's beach sits for horses ridden out into Clearwater Bay for fresh water (the bay still retains some name meaning 'fresh water' - it used To be called Indian Harbour).Captain Butler built an office buildings here which remain standing today known as Butler Tower (now occupied by Gulfstream Airlines). At that time there wasn't much commerce going on around here so most people just gathered around the captain’s office tower during lunchtime or dinner time while they ate their catches or caught any fish they could find! After Captain Butler came John Cramer who started setting up stores along Clearwater Bay doing business as Gator Creek merchants since freshwater only ran into Price Harbor area so deep! There wasn't really anything else closeby so Gator Creek became very famous for its seafood! Cramer also started building homes here among others including Fort Myers Beach House which still stands today! In 1849 Captain Wainwright sailed past here en route from Key West bound for St Augustine but got diverted off course after seeing something strange off shore! After investigating he found that one of his anchors had sunk offshore!!! The locals believe that bad news brought about by pirates!! After some exploring he found another anchor that still docked next door usable so he took it over!! From then until 1959 there were 3 captains visiting monthly plus Captains George Sledge & Jno Fenton each month2 years!! After Captains Wainwright & Fenton left USS Constitution decommissioned here in 1959 due To budget cuts within Navy Zephyrhills reverted back back under State Control but never regained its Glades character until recent times when developers revived interest The current incarnation of Zephyrhillss begins with residential development starting circa 1960 followed by commercial development beginning circa 1985 In late 2006 Hurricane Wilma passed through this area bringing extensive flooding causing widespread damage across Monroe County however No injuries occurred anywhere except parts of Ft Myers Beach where level crossings closed temporarily due high waves crashing onto communities along coastline

The area had a population of only 10 people when it was incorporated as a town on May 1, 1853. In 1865, Zephyrhills became the capital of Florida and remained so until 1959 when Tallahassee became the state capital.
