Zephyrhills is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota–Bradenton–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. Zephyrhills began as a small post office called "Ellerbe" on April 12, 1851. On July 15, 1868, it became part of the newly created Sarasota County. In 1905 Zephyrhills incorporated as a town and by 1907 had over 1,000 residents. The first store in Zephyrhills was built on what is now First Street in 1888 by Samuel Higgs and his brother-in-law Wm. Easley. The store not only served the community but also provided employment for local farmers who grew corn and other crops there until 1928 when Interstate 95 opened up and destroyed much of rural Sarasota County. By 1930 Zephyrhills had 5 stores and 100 residents; however during World War II many businesses closed due to wartime shortages of materials like wooden shelves and pails because of rationing set by the military authorities. On October 8, 1947 Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Cape Coral after making its way from Mexico through Cuba then Puerto Rico before making landfall near Tampa Bay on September 10th (the date has been incorrectly reported as October 6th). As a result of Floyd's intensity (100 mph winds), widespread power outages followed throughout much of Florida which lasted intoTuesday night August 29th with some areas reaching levels below 30 degrees F (-1 degrees C). This left many homes without heat or light for days while businesses were closed due to lack of resources available to restore services once they resumed normal operations that evening In total over $2 million worth of damage was caused with an estimated 20% loss in human life; however this number does not include losses from trees downed by Floyd or damage done to homes that were uninsured or unrepaired following its passage through Florida These events are often referred to as "Floyd's Day." The National Weather Service later determined that although portions of Marco Island sustained significant flooding due to high waves generated by Floyd - including some beachfront properties - most damage occurred inland along Gulf Coast waterways where water levels remained low even after heavy rains associated with Irma conducted similar flooding three weeks later . Despite this extensive damage assessment Air Force jet bombers flew overhead providing support during early morning hours August 29th ) To date no one has been convicted for any role in causing such extensive damage In 1984 ZIP code 33076 was established within Sarasota County adjacent to present day Zephyrhills limits . postal service moved all mail destined for ZIP code 33011 which encompassed parts both east and westof town prior to consolidation into 33076 However ZIP code 33076 continuesto be used today primarily by locals who send packages directly to their families residing within those boundaries
The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1513. The area that is now known as Zephyrhills was part of Escambia County, Florida. In 1834, Seminole Indians began inhabiting the region and by 1838, the Seminoles had abandoned their land. In 1865, Zephyrhills became a town when it was annexed by Jacksonville. It had a population of just over 1000 people when it incorporated as a town. In 1971, Jacksonville annexed Zephyrhills and its population dropped to just under 1000 people again. Zephyrhills has seen many changes over the years. In 1941, it became an airbase during World War II and later played an important role in NASA's moon landing program. There have been several large events associated with Zephyrhills including the hurricane of 2005 which destroyed most of the town's infrastructure and caused extensive damage; and Hurricane Anna which knocked out power to parts of Jacksonville for several days in late September 2016
