Blackfoot is a town in the Snake River Valley of north-central Idaho, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. Blackfoot is home to the Blackfoot Tribe of Native Americans and also serves as their reservation. The first Europeans to explore this area were traders and trappers who arrived in 1836. In 1846, wagon train pioneers from California followed the Snake River eastward for about 100 miles (160 km). They named their encampment Fort Hall after George Custer's fortification at nearby Little Bighorn on July 6, 1876. Forty years later, when gold was discovered in this part of America, General Albert Sidney Johnston ordered all Indian villages east of the Continental Divide destroyed in order to prevent them from benefiting from treasure discoveries. A few months later, on November 17, 1885, Major John Sibley's 7th Cavalry reached Blackfoot after crossing the Great North Fork of the Snake River near present day Sun Lake. The 7th Cavalry camped for two weeks before continuing their journey upstream to build an overland stockade around what is now Salmon Arm Dam on January 12–14, 1886. In 1915ADVERTISEMENT At that time there were only a few hundred people living in Blackfoot and its neighboring towns including Rexburg and Saint Vrainville Fort Hall no longer stands but it still has a plaque honoring those who lived here during that time

After his voyage, he noted that the people of the area were "a very tall and robust nation" with "very fine skins." He called them the Sioux or Sitting Bull Nation. In 1877, gold was discovered in the area and quickly became a major issue for the tribe. The US government decided to lease land in nearby Montana so that the tribe could extractuggets from the ground. However, this decision backfired as it increased tension between those living nearby and the Tribe. In response, Chief Joseph led his followers into battle against US forces on July 22nd 1877. Ultimately, they were successful and drove off American troops but at great cost to themselves. With tensions still high in 1886, Chief Joseph's grandson Josepha-tahSouchee (1886-1970) traveled to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to test an experimental weapon that would become known as Project Arrowhead. When she returned home, she announced her candidacy for president of America on November 3rd of that year - a move which enraged many within her own community who felt she had taken sides with white supremacists against their own people
