Eagle, Idaho is a small town in the Snake River Valley that has been home to fishermen and sailors for centuries. The town was founded by James Irvine in 1875 as a result of his discovery of oil near the present-day town. Eagle is located in the Sawtooth Valley of central Idaho, about halfway between Boise and the nearby town of Coeur d'Alene. The valley was formed by a collision of two tectonic plates about 60 million years ago. Today, Eagle is an agricultural community with a population of about 900 people. The first Europeans to visit Eagle were fur traders from Russia in 1805. In 1812, Russian trader Pavel Kondratyev settled in the area and built the first post office at what is now known as Depot Hill. The post office was moved to its current location in 1903. In 1861, General Anson Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment camped near Eagle on their way eastward during the American Civil War. On July 12, 1861, General Custer's horse was killed while grazing near Eagle on Ridge Top Mountain. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Williams took command of the regiment and ordered his troopers to encamp at Eagle for supplies and reinforcements. On October 25, 1861, Italian immigrant Giuseppe Zanussi organized a wagon train carrying members of his family across the Snake River into Oregon Territory for resettlement under US auspices. The wagon train stopped at Eagles on their way northbound on April 2, 1862; Zanussi had no choice but to disembark and walk the rest of the trip himself because he could not afford horses or wagons. He arrived in Boise on April 16th and began his settlement there with his family that same day; they named their new home "Eagle" after Webb County (now Colorado) where he had been living before he crossed into Oregon Territory). On May 10th Hawk Peak was climbed by Major John Wesley Powell who map-marked it as part of Ute National Forest #9A . By 1907 eagle had become a city which included both depot hill and parkrose streets
Eagle is located in Eastern Idaho, at the head of the Snake River. The first European to see Eagle was Spanish missionary Juan Rodriguez de la Hoz in 1795, while exploring the area for a fur trade assignment. He named it after a nearby peak, El Ejército (The Army). Therenamed to Eagle in 1877 by US land grantee Colonel George Armstrong Custer as part of a effort to create an Anglo-American border around what is now Wyoming and Colorado, it remained an Indian reservation until 1959. In 1935, during World War II, the USAAF built an airfield here on 1123 acres (500 hectares) east of the town center. From 1942 to 1945 it served as Ishmael Air Force Base; from 1946 to 1951 it was known as Chicken Springs Air Force Base. In 1957 Eagle became a city and has since grown rapidly with its location within easy access of several major metropolitan areas including Boise and Ketchum. Today, Eagle is one of the fastest-growing cities in Idaho with over $100 million invested in its economy - more than any other city in the state. It is home to several Fortune 500 companies and has become known for its quality education and environment which have made it one of America's most popular destinations for families
