The Marines of the Idaho Falls Marine Barracks have been providing a service to our country for many years. The unit has fought in some of the most difficult and dangerous situations, both overseas and here at home. They are an essential part of our military and their deployment history is something that we all remember. In 1951, the Marine Barracks was opened as a barracks for the newly forming 5th Marines Regiment. At first they were housed in tents on the grounds of nearby Fort Boise. In 1953, they moved into their own barracks on Weiser Avenue in downtown Idaho Falls. Over time, more buildings were added to the battalion until it had three buildings on 21st Street SE in central Idaho Falls. During World War II, marine battalions served throughout southern Asia and Europe as part of Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO). After World War II ended, marines returned home in 1946 with orders to form units stationed at Camp Pendleton near San Diego as part of United States Marine Corps Forces Installations worldwide (USMC FMF IWO). A number of these units were used for training new Marines before being sent overseas where they participated in various campaigns including Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Saipan. In 1951 when 5th Marines Regiment was activated it was one of only two detachments from Fort Lewis AFB Wash., District Hawaii which also included Headquarters Battalion 2nd Infantry Division & 8th Naval Air Squadron) which deployed to Korea during 1950-1951 known as 3rd Fleet Amphibious Force attached USS Makin Island Landing Force(L) Units Deployed: 1st Battalion 5th Marines Regiment - deployed to Korea 1951 2nd Battalion 5th Marines Regiment -Deployed to Korea 1951 3rd Battalion 5th Marines Regiment -Deployed to Korea 1951 4th Battalion 7th Marines -deployed To Japan 1952-1953 ( concurrently located at Camp Elliott AAF Hawaii ) 5/8ths Naval Air Squadron detachment supporting amphibious operations off USS Makin Island during Korean Conflict
