The LDS Church was founded in 1847 in the town of Fillmore, New Mexico. The first building erected in Idaho Falls was a log cabin, which served as a meeting hall and chapel until 1840. The first bishopric was established in Fillmore in 1850 and the first stake was organized on July 9, 1851. In 1862, Brigham Young delegated authority to build a temple at Boise City. The first temple dedication took place on April 6, 1865. On November 1, 1907, the LDS Church announced that it would establish an international headquarters at Salt Lake City. After World War II ended with Japan's entry into the war without provocation and with American troops stationed there, the LDS Church decided to move its headquarters from Boise City to Utah Territory after president Joseph Fainter recommended it for their need for more space. In 1948-1949, church members built a new brick LDS Temple next to what is now known as Priesthood Square Park adjacent to Main Street in Idaho Falls. The temple has been used by both the LDS Church and other denominations since it opened; it is one of only two temples still standing from when America became an independent country (the other being Smithfield Baptist Methodist Temple located in Richmond Virginia).
